Why does the writer of Hebrews (I believe it’s Paul by the way) commend Abraham so highly for attempting to sacrifice Isaac? I’ve seen a plentitude of confusion about this story, and many odd takes ranging from Abraham’s mental illness to child abuse.
But all these opinions are all missing this one key word “wenasubah” which the writer of Hebrews does not miss. Abraham was certain they were both coming back.
This episode digs deeper into “wenasubah” (ונשובה meaning ‘we will come back’) in Genesis 22:5.
“Abraham said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” (Genesis 22:5-ESV)
Genesis 22:5 – ה ויאמר אברהם אל נעריו שבו לכם פה עם החמור ואני והנער נלכה עד כה ונשתחוה ונשובה אליכם
